NJ Driving Test

Anyone who wishes to drive on the highways and public streets in New Jersey needs to have a valid Learner’s Permit or Driver’s License which can be secured from any of the NJ DMV locations.

The questions included in the New Jersey written knowledge test are lifted from the NJ MVC Driver’s Manual. The written knowledge test will cover New Jersey traffic laws, road signs, road rules and practices for safe driving.

New Jersey created a Graduated Driver License Program in 2001 to better ensure the safety of drivers. The program stipulates that when you are a first time applicant for a driver’s license, you first need to secure a restricted permit before you will be issued a full driver’s license. Everyone must pass this process no matter the age.

If you are between 16 and 17 years old, you first need to enroll in a driver’s training course and pass the driver written test before you can be issued your special learner permit. If you are over 17 years old, you may no longer need to enroll in a driving school but you still need to pass the driver written knowledge test.

The New Jersey Permit Test

The NJ DMV driver written knowledge test consists of 50 multiple choice questions lifted from information included in the 2018 New Jersey Driver’s Manual. To pass, you need to get a score of 80% or 40 correct answers. You can take the test at any of the NJ DMV offices.

The New Jersey driver permit written knowledge test is not that difficult if you study the NJ Driver’s Manual.

To make sure you pass the New Jersey driver written knowledge test, there are online practice tests you can take to familiarize yourself with the format and types of questions included in the NJ driver written knowledge test. The practice test includes the questions and answers that are usually included in the actual New Jersey driver written knowledge test.

You need to pass your NJ Permit Test so you can be issued your driver permit. If you fail the NJ Permit test, you can retake the test anytime you wish, even immediately.

It is however recommended that you do not rush into retaking it. Re-study the Driver’s Manual thoroughly and take more of the online Practice tests. Failing the written knowledge test three times means you will need to wait six months before you are eligible to try again.

Once you have pass your NJ permit test, you will be issued your NJ Learner’s Permit. You can practice driving in New Jersey with your Learner’s Permit as long as you are accompanied (seated next to you in the vehicle) by anyone who is at least 21 years old and with a New Jersey driver’s license.

You will also need to have on your vehicle 2 reflectorized license plate decals, one on the front and one of the back license plates when you drive. You do not need to pay anything for the written test but you will need to pay for your driver’s permit and the decals.

After 6 months, and when you are at least 17 years old, you are already eligible to apply for your NJ provisional license.
